We’ve all heard the song, right? Tequila . . . it makes me happy. Well if it doesn’t, it certainly should! If like me, you spend a lot of time and energy trying to get in shape for summer, you’ll probably not be thrilled about all calories lurking in our favourite summer drinks.

I’m not suggesting for a minute that we all go teetotal – no no no god forbid! As there’s nothing I love more than a cold drink on a hot summer’s evening, but it’s just about making clever choices. This is where tequila comes in. Not only is it a cleaner, leaner way to enjoy alcohol, but it’s agavins are also proven to reduce cholesterol levels. Some studies even show that the natural sugars found in tequila trigger insulin production and lower blood sugar levels.

What’s more, when it comes to alcohol-induced bloating, tequila helps to control the absorption of fat, so won’t leave you feel sluggish like your favourite beer or wine. Being a cleaner alcohol, tequila means you can wave goodbye to your hangovers, too – trust me, I’ve tried it, it works!

When I first started seeing my facial acupuncturist Sarah, she advised me if I was to drink, that I should choose tequila due to its lower sugar content, making it better for the skin, thats when I knew her and I would be friends for life! 🙂 Such good advice.

However, it’s important to choose your tipple wisely. Look for tequilas that are 100% agave, and you don’t need to just do shots either! Pure varieties of this drink don’t have the same taste bud burning sensation, so can be enjoyed sipped over ice. If a longer drink is more your thing, I’ve compiled a list of my favourite blanco tequila-based tipples. Enjoy!

  1. The minimal margarita

Forget orange liqueur, this is the simplest way to mix your tequila. Use a natural sweetener such as honey, I like to use agave even less sugar than honey, squeeze in a fresh lime and, viola! Or if you love watermelon, my new fav is a watermelon margarita. Simply blend up fresh watermelon, remove the pips, add a little agave to sweeten although I find it’s sweet enough. It’s honestly so delicious, wonderfully refreshing and cools down the skin, the only downside it’s so easy to drink, so beware!

  1. Tequila and soda

The least calorific way to enjoy tequila – simply mix with your favourite fizzy water and a lime wedge. What better way to stay hydrated!

  1. Skinny Paloma

The Paloma is Mexico’s favourite drink. This grapefruit juice-based drink is packed full of vitamin C, which helps to maintain a healthy heart – just what the doctor ordered! Simply mix fresh grapefruit juice with Perrier’s sparkling pink grapefruit water, a twist of lime and your chosen tequila.

The day after the night before, if you’re partial to a Bloody Mary at brunch or even breakfast, ( no judgement ) Swap out the vodka for a tequila blanco and it’s a Bloody Maria!

So, there you have it, my guide to enjoying a calorie-friendly tipple this summer. Remember to always drink responsibly, my advice would be to get a good quality tequila and if you have any tequila recipes you’d like to share with the readers of You Glow Girl, pop them in the comments box below.
