I still have a festive hangover. Or, at least, my skin does. While the rest of me is firmly in recovery mode, my complexion is struggling to get back on track. I put this down to a few things: overindulgence, coughs and colds, the extremities in my climate – from having my heating cranked up to the freezing outdoors. These things all add up to irritated skin.

Luckily, over the years, I’ve learnt a few tricks to help me combat these complaints. So, however your skin suffers during this time of year – from breakouts to dryness and everything in between – here’s my top tips for getting your glow back.

First thing’s first: however tempting it is to scrub or pick at your skin, avoid doing this at all costs. Steer clear of harsh cleansers, or anything abrasive, and your complexion will recover much quicker. Moisture is the key and as gentle and natural as possible, which leads me nicely to my best product picks.

If it’s kind enough for babies’ skin, it’s kind enough for ours. This super affordable Calendula weather protection cream (from Weleda £7.95 for 30ml, available at www.allbeauty.com) is perfect for even the most sensitive skin. It works to form a protective barrier between your complexion and the climate. Simply smother on a layer before you leave the house, or use as a base under make-up.

When every ounce of hydration is zapped from my skin, a super nourishing oil is in order. This one from Aromatherapy Associates (hydrating nourishing face oil £49 for 15ml, available at libertylondon.com) is packed full of rose and evening primrose oil, which boosts circulation and hydration. Sandalwood locks in my skin’s natural moisture. Add a few pumps of this oil to your usual routine, paying particular attention to any problems areas.

Next, and because skincare begins from the inside, I’m a big fan of Lumity Life’s Day and Night Nutritional Supplementation (four-week subscription for £76.50, available at lumitylife.co.uk). Three capsules are taken morning and night. Your first dose of the day is a Vita Complex formula, containing Selenium and Zinc, as well as vitamins C and E. These give your body a boost from within, helping skin to battle the effects of pollutants. The night time Renew Complex is packed full of amino acids and Omega 3s, which supports your skin’s rejuvenation process. These really put the supple into skincare supplements.

Lastly, an oldie but a goodie is Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream (£28 for 50ml, available at elizabetharden.co.uk). This fragrance-free formula can be used anywhere, and is especially gentle on super chapped skin. During winter, I keep a tube of this stashed in my handbag at all times – perfect for applying to lips, hands and face.

So, there you have it – my guide to getting your glow back this winter. If you have any skincare miracles to share, pop them in the comments box below!

Lisa, I’m new to your posts. Loving them so far. Could you advise on every day face wash? I stand in boots clueless. I’m 41 so soap is a no no.
